The aircraft with 190 (or 191) onboard skidded off the end of the runway and came to rest in a valley, possibly on its second attempt at landing. The aircraft was heavily damaged, so far two confirmed fatalities. Heavy rains in the area may have contributed to the accident.

Sad.

besides the obvious like visibility, does heavy rain mess with other sensors or things like that on planes?

I’ve landed in MN in some pretty intense snow storms before and been fine (anecdotal, I know). I’m assuming this accident was a combo of a bunch of stuff going wrong?

It was a repatriation flight too.  I think we’re going to have a few more of these (including PIA 8303) before the pandemic ends.

That is awful. Perhaps a sudden downpour created standing water on the runway and meant the plane hydroplaned?

You can hydroplane, you can get caught in a heavy tail wind, you can get caught in a microburst (though you shouldn’t nowadays). Apparently it was their second attempt at shooting the landing. Sounds like really bad conditions.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire. Sad.

I don’t think it was sudden. There has been heavy rain in the area for a while now, and this was their second shot at the landing.

Arm chair theorizing doesn't do much good I guess. We don't know what happened or what it was like o. The ground.

Yikes.

Thankfully it sounds like most  of the people onboard are ok.

No, it doesn’t. Back when that Pakistan 320 crashed, the conjecture was wild. Ultimately, nobody believed they could possibly have landed gear up, damaged the engines, but then manage a go around only to crash short when the damaged engines failed. Crazy. Still, I think it’s a safe bet to say that weather played a role.

I hope so. It’s early yet, and that one photo shows a lot of heavy damage. The only saving grace is that there appears to have been no fire.

A lot of bad stuff can happen when the rain is heavy enough.  And in that part of the world, the rain absolutely gets heavy enough.  Plus the rain is often accompanied by strong winds, wind shear, etc.  Lots of possibilities, maybe even more than 1 played a role.

Pictures I saw appear to show that the aircraft left the runway intact but struck a small building near the runway (the checkerboard painted on one wall is visible in the second photo) :

Hmm I can’t remember what local airline we used in India between cities.

One of my employees was going to be on that plane....

Luckily the pandemic slowed his travel plans.
